At Charge Fitness, we love celebrating the unique stories of our members, and Ruby Herrera’s journey is one that shows the power of resilience and determination. Originally from Chicago, Ruby is an entrepreneur and marketing business owner who now calls Arlington, Texas, home. Her family roots in Mexico are important to her, and she carries that strong sense of connection into everything she does—including her fitness journey. Ruby's dedication to improving her health, both physically and mentally, is inspiring, and we’re honored to be part of her story.

Finding Her Way Back to Fitness

Ruby’s fitness journey started back in high school, where she joined track, tennis, and soccer. What started as a way to feel fit and confident eventually became an outlet for Ruby to push herself and work through insecurities. “At one point, I had an ex-boyfriend who made me feel unattractive and insecure,” Ruby recalls. “While that hurt, it gave me the push I needed to focus on losing weight and learning how to stay healthy.”

After moving to Arlington, Ruby found Charge Fitness and signed up for a kickboxing class. Having worked with a personal trainer in Chicago who introduced her to boxing, she was excited to dive back into the sport. “I tried another fitness center for a while, and while it helped me build endurance, I often felt lost with the workout equipment,” Ruby says. That’s when she made the switch to Charge Fitness, where she immediately felt welcomed by the trainers and members. “It felt like the right place to continue my fitness journey,” she adds.

Overcoming Barriers and Finding Strength

Ruby’s fitness path hasn’t always been easy, especially after a traumatic experience with a barbell accident in Chicago. “The bar fell on me because no one was spotting, and I hit the ground hard,” Ruby recalls. That incident left her with a deep fear of using the barbell, but that changed when she joined Charge Fitness.

With the support of Tracey, one of Charge’s trainers, Ruby decided to give the barbell another try. “I ended up lifting more weight than I ever did in Chicago,” Ruby says, reflecting on the moment. Overcome with emotion after finishing her set, Ruby broke down in tears, and Nicole, embraced her in a hug. “It wasn’t just a physical barrier I overcame, but a mental one too. That moment had a huge impact on me,” she shares.

This moment is a testament to Ruby’s perseverance and the supportive environment at Charge Fitness. No matter where you’re starting from or what challenges you face, you’ll find a community that has your back, just like Ruby did.

Staying Consistent and Strong

For Ruby, staying active and consistent is about more than just looking fit—it’s about ensuring her future self is strong and capable. “I always try to think about my future self,” she says. “Will I be healthy enough to take a walk, lift my groceries, or run around with my future kids and keep up with them?” That’s the driving force behind her commitment to fitness. Ruby’s goal is to maintain her strength, especially her upper body, where she’s made significant progress.

With her church wedding set for February 25, 2025, Ruby is determined to stay consistent with her fitness. “My seamstress says I can’t gain or lose any weight from here on out,” she laughs. Ruby’s fitness journey is now focused on continuing to improve her upper body strength and confidence—because, as she puts it, she’s “definitely not making two trips to carry groceries into my apartment!”

Finding Balance and Relieving Stress

Beyond the gym, Ruby loves staying active in other ways, especially when traveling for work. “I travel a lot for business, so staying consistent with fitness can be tricky,” Ruby admits. But she always finds ways to stay active, whether it’s hiking, taking a mountain tour, or going for a quick run. In Chicago, Ruby used to participate in 5K runs with friends, and she even completed a 22-mile run—an incredible achievement!

For Ruby, fitness isn’t just about staying in shape—it’s her escape. “Staying active has been a great way to relieve stress from my everyday life,” she says. “It’s like an escape where I can focus on myself and becoming the best version of me.”

What’s Next for Ruby?

Ruby’s journey at Charge Fitness is far from over. She’s continuing to work on her strength and consistency while preparing for her wedding. With big goals like running more races, maintaining her upper body strength, and staying active on her travels, Ruby is focused on making fitness a lifelong habit.

Her fitness journey is a perfect example of falling back into fitness—not once, but twice. After initially getting into fitness in high school, and again after overcoming her fear of the barbell, Ruby proves that no matter where you are in life, it’s never too late to come back stronger. Ruby’s story reminds us that resilience and determination can help you overcome anything and Fall in Love with Fitness again.

Her advice to anyone starting their own fitness journey? “Your mind can sometimes be the biggest obstacle to becoming your best self. Don’t overthink it or let the idea of starting hold you back—just take that first step and go for it!”

Ruby truly embodies the Charge Fitness values of Commitment, Resolve, and Growth, and we’re proud to be part of her fitness journey.
